Services Common To All We Support

Everyone served by EnAble benefits from the knowledge and skills of an assigned Support Service Leader who coordinates an ongoing person-centered planning process that includes the persons served, their family members and the EnAble staff members from all departments who will be directly providing the services. The Support Service Leaders focus on developing approaches and strategies for services that enable the people we serve to live lives that reflect their personal dreams, goals, interests and preferences. Support Service Leaders also bring expertise in accessing and managing benefits and linking people with community resources.

Residential Support Services

Some individuals with developmental disabilities need the comprehensive, round-the-clock support provided in residential support services. EnAble currently provides these support services in twenty-two homes located in North and South Fulton County.

Each home is located in a residential neighbor-hood and usually serves four individuals. Each person has his or her own bedroom unless he or she prefers to share with another person.

Support services provided are individualized and comprehensive and include, but are not limited to: recreation, transportation, medical support, teaching and training new skills, assistance with self-administration of medication and personal care (i.e., bathing, dressing, grooming, etc.), and household and financial management.

While EnAble rarely experiences vacancies in existing group homes, EnAble works with individuals and families to develop new homes upon request. This process takes time and is geared to those individuals and families who are seeking an alternative that is customized.
It is appropriate for identifying and planning long-term residential options that closely match individual preferences in terms of house mates, location and other factors that may be important to each person and his or her family.

Day Services

Day Services provides a range of opportunities and experiences for individuals for whom independent employment in the community is
not a goal. Day Services provide participants with the opportunity to experience and learn about employment through group employment, skills training, and volunteer opportunities with supervision and support provided by EnAble Day Service staff members.

Some of these activities are carried out on the premises of community businesses and organizations. Examples include volunteer work at Community Gardens, Atlanta Area Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, Adopt-a-Road, and others.

Day Services also provide scheduled classes to build skills in tasks such as communication, reading, managing money, etc. that are meaningful to participants.

Recreation in the community is also integrated into the Day Services program with regular activities
of interest such as trips to the zoo, the aquarium, swimming at the YMCA, and many more.

In both of EnAble's two Day Services facilities in North and South Fulton County, contract service work opportunities are provided for those we serve. Some of those we assist include:

Appen Newspapers (Alpharetta Review, Forsyth Herald, and Johns Creek Herald)
Emory Training Center
Heavenly Ham
IFS - The Cottage School
InterContinental Hotels Group
Roswell High School
Southern Financial Network
Strouds Southern Printing
And many more.

EnAble's staff members and those we serve are pleased to provide companies with the resources they need to complete:
Bulk mail jobs
Light assembly work
Collating
Folding and Stuffing
Sorting
Packaging
Bulk Mail
Labeling
Sealing
Assembling
And other time consuming projects

All work done with excellence at affordable prices!

Employment Services

Many of the people EnAble serves want to have jobs in community businesses. Supported Employment services provide long-term and ongoing assistance that enables people with developmental disabilities to find and keep jobs in the community.

EnAble Supported Employment Specialists help people find jobs that match personal interests and abilities with job specifications and the business environments of area employers. Sometimes the people we serve need exposure to different employment possibilities before settling on a type of job. EnAble utilizes job sampling and other techniques to provide a basis for meaningful choices. Supported Employment Services also include coaching and training in interviewing, completing job applications and other employment-related skills.

Once an individual obtains a job, EnAble Employment Specialists train the newly hired employee at the job site, enabling him or her to learn the skills and routines of the job to the employer’s specifications. Ongoing, long-term support identifies and addresses issues that may arise so that the position can be maintained.

While many of the individuals supported by EnAble stay in one job for many years, others want or need to change jobs from time to time. EnAble Supported Employment Specialists identify new job opportunities when these changes occur.

The types of jobs and kinds of businesses in which people obtain jobs are as varied as the interests of the people served. Among the businesses who have employed individuals served by the EnAble’s Supported Employment program are: Kroger, Burger King, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Pets are People Too, Champagne Tastes, BlueLinx, Walgreens, ChemStar, Pizza Hut, Residence Inn and many others.

Personal Support Services

EnAble offers Personal Support Services which are provided in an individual’s own home or apartment or in a family or foster home. With Personal Support Services of eight hours per day or less, many individuals with developmental disabilities are able to live safely and independently in their own homes or apartments.

EnAble Personal Support Services may include training and/or support with:

• Home management (such as meal planning, shopping, budgeting, and bill paying)
• Housekeeping (such as cleaning, laundry, changing linens, and trash disposal)
• Transportation/escort (accompanying, providing or arranging transportation to places outside of the residence for appointments, entertainment, exercise, recreation, shopping or social activities)
• Meal preparation
• Ambulation and transfer
• Medically-related activities (such as observing and reporting changes in condition, arranging trips to the doctor, picking up prescription drugs, accompanying individuals
to medical appointments, and assisting with the self-administration of medications)
• Personal care (such as toileting, grooming, bathing, dressing, and eating)

As is true for all of EnAble’s services, the exact type and amount of support provided is determined by the needs and preferences of the persons served.

Recreational Activities

EnAble utilizes the recreational opportunities provided by the communities in which our homes and offices are located.

Those we serve enjoy bowling, golf, playing softball, going horseback riding, going to dances and socials, attending  church and Sunday School, and interacting with others in the community.

Respite

EnAble provides the housing for companies providing respite services to families who have their developmentally disabled children living at home with them. The family can take a break while the child enjoys visiting with his peers in a pleasant, home-like atmosphere.

Spotlight on Personal Support Services

Seth Quick is EnAble’s new Director of
Personal Support Services. Already
possessing several years of support coordination experience, Seth had been working in the area of personal support since coming to EnAble in April 2005. The increased demand for these services has necessitated the need for another department within EnAble’s Support Services structure. EnAble South received private home care licensing in April 2006, followed by the North office in October 2006. Seth and his staff of 26, including two Support Managers, work to provide services to 19 clients residing in North and South Fulton County. With personal support services of eight hours per day or less, many individuals with developmental disabilities are able to live safely and independently in their own homes or apartments.

EnAble’s Personal Support Services may include training and/or support with:
• Home management (such as meal planning, shopping, budgeting, and bill paying);
• Housekeeping (such as cleaning, laundry, changing linens, and trash disposal);
• Transportation/escort (accompanying, providing, or arranging transportation to places outside of the residence for appointments, entertainment, exercise, recreation, shopping, or social

activities);
• Meal preparation;
• Ambulation and transfer;
• Medically-related activities (such as observing and reporting changes in condition, arranging trips to the doctor, picking up prescription drugs, accompanying individuals to medical appointments, and assisting with the self-administration of medications); and
• Personal care (such as toileting, grooming, bathing, dressing, and eating).

"The demand for personal care services has greatly increased in recent months, particularly in July when prospective clients receive new Medicaid waivers for services," explained Seth. "Also, the type and amount of service provided by our staff is directly based on the needs of the consumer."

When asked what challenges he is facing in his new role, Seth conveyed, "Finding the right match of staff to the person receiving services and their family is crucial. The staff member works a non-traditional schedule according to the needs of the client, and must be flexible, self-motivated, and able to work with little supervision. As well, the demand for private home care is growing rapidly in North Fulton, and the Personal Support Services department has to be ready to meet that demand."

LaTaunya Jarrette, EnAble South’s Personal Support Manager, previously served as a Support Manager in Residential Services for the past several years. She offered her views on adapting to Personal Support Services. "As the Personal Support department is an independent living environment, I strive hard at assisting only, and not providing direct care, so the staff and I basically work per the consumers’ requests. I’ve not gotten used to the fact that it’s okay for the clients to be at home alone all day. It’s okay for them to go places without staff, and not to receive services from staff. This, to me, is evident of the consumers striving to become more independent, and that’s the ultimate goal that Personal Support endeavors to achieve."

EnAble North’s new Personal Support Manager is Teria Wray, who has worked extensively in Residential Services. Her passion for working with the developmentally disabled is evident and contagious. "I love serving the individuals we support and their families on a one-on-one basis," says Teria. "My profession has become personal, therefore my expression of service has become an extension to the families as a family member. Further, the clients we serve are vehicles and the staff are the roads on which they travel. With our support, they will reach their destination." w
